The American MC-2 (Modified Cargo) is a naval transport aircraft used by the United States Armed Forces. It is based on the Douglas DC-3 airliner and was first introduced in the 1940s. The MC-2 was primarily used during the Korean War to transport troops, supplies, and equipment, but it has also seen service in other conflicts, including the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. Today, the MC-2 is mainly used for personnel recovery, search and rescue, and transport of other military cargo. The aircraft is known for its durability, reliability, and versatility in austere environments. In terms of specifications, the MC-2 typically has a cockpit crew of two (pilot and copilot) and can carry up to 36 troops, or up to 6,000 pounds of cargo (depending on the configuration). It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-1830-90 Engines, with a maximum speed of around 200 knots (230 mph) and a range of up to 1,100 nautical miles. The MC-2 has a standard wingspan of 94 feet and a length of 63 feet. Because the MC-2 is no longer in production, it is considered a legacy aircraft by modern military standards. However, it remains a reliable workhorse for niche missions where lighter, faster aircraft are not practical, and its capabilities continue to be valued by the military.
